Living God's Covenant: Exploring the Issues

Current Issue:

Questions of Culture

Even if our two churches could agree over every detail of what we believe about the Christian Gospel, ‘visible unity’ might still be a long way off.

The 2006 regional workshops revealed a great deal of difference that can be defined under the broad heading of ‘culture’. Some of the issues are highlighted in the Reflections and Stories below.

Instinctively different Christian communities tend to think differently and behave differently. We cannot assume that the patterns of relationship within which we feel comfortable and ‘at home’ are experienced in the same way in another tradition.

SOME QUESTIONS FOR DEBATE – Your comments are welcome

A: How do these cultural differences affect what we envisage when we talk about ‘visible unity’?

B: How do they limit what kind of unity (‘visible’ or otherwise) is possible?

C: To what extent have both churches got to surrender their cultural norms for the sake of building a new unified community?

D: Is it possible for human communities to exist without developing their own cultural distinctiveness over time?
